Methodology
How we verify.
Everything we publish must trace to a primary source. If we cannot verify it, we do not publish it.
Source tiers
- Tier 1 — Official: regulators, central banks, standard setters, legislatures and official journals (e.g. ECB, EBA, ESMA, BIS, FSB, Federal Reserve, OCC, SEC, CFTC, Bank of England, FCA, HKMA, MAS, SARB, Banco Central do Brasil, EUR-Lex). Summarised and quoted.
- Tier 2 — Institutional: banks, payment networks and market infrastructures, from their own newsrooms. Summarised and quoted briefly.
- Tier 3 — Media: headline, link and a one-line note only; never used as the sole basis for a fact, status or date.
Quote verification
- Every item stores the primary-source URL and at least one verbatim quote.
- A verifier (
scripts/verify.mjs) re-fetches the live page and string-matches every quote after normalising whitespace and typographic quotes. No match, no publication; the check re-runs before every deploy. - Regulatory dates on the timeline are verified the same way against the official page that states them. Where an official site blocks automated fetching, the entry is flagged and was checked by hand.
- Where a regulator has not fixed a calendar date, we show the rule (e.g. “60 days after Federal Register publication”), never an estimate.
Facts vs analysis
Item pages label sections Fact (summary, key facts, dates, quotes — all traceable to the source) or Analysis (“Why it matters for banks” — our editorial judgement). Optional sections such as “Who is affected” or “What remains uncertain” appear only when the source supports them.
Evidence types
Every source on an item page and in the tracker carries one of five labels:
- Primary — the regulator’s or legislature’s own record: register entries (e.g. ESMA’s interim MiCA register), decisions, legal text, official releases about the authority’s own action.
- Official institutional — the institution’s own statement (bank newsroom, results release, filing). It proves what the institution says it did; a press release proves an announcement, not that a product is broadly available.
- Secondary — reporting or write-ups by third parties (media, promotion agencies, aggregators). Never the sole basis for a status or date.
- Interpretation — our analysis, labelled Analysis.
- Needs review — evidence we could not tie to a primary or first-party record; shown, but flagged.
Intent, pilot, authorisation, live transaction, commercial product
- Bank intent
- A public statement of plans, a product name, a consortium membership or an MoU. Tracker status: Announced / exploring or Developing / partnership established.
- Pilot
- Use with a limited, named set of participants or limited value, described by the source as a pilot, proof of concept or test. Status: Pilot / proof of concept.
- Authorisation
- A licence, registration or approval recorded by the competent authority. Status: Approved / authorised — only when the approval itself is verified (preferably in the authority’s register). For EU credit institutions, a MiCA Article 60 notification is shown separately as Notified (MiCA Art. 60): it allows a bank to provide the notified services but is not an authorisation and does not prove a product launched.
- Live transaction
- One or more real-value transactions with specific counterparties. Status: Live — restricted / specific counterparties. A first live transaction is not a commercial service.
- Commercial product
- Customers can use it within a scope the source states (markets, client types). Status: Live — commercial, within explicit scope, always with the scope shown.
- Other
- Suspended / ended / superseded when the source says so; Unknown / not independently confirmed whenever we have no adequate evidence for that dimension.
The tracker records these on three separate dimensions — regulatory, technical and commercial — because they move independently. Each change is stored in a status history with the transition date, the date we discovered it, an explanation, the reviewer and its sources. Every source is re-fetched and its extract string-matched before each deploy (scripts/verify-tracker.mjs); sources that block automated fetching are marked as manually checked with a date.
Dates on the regulatory timeline
Legally operative dates are fixed by legal text or the authority’s own decision; provisional dates are rule-based (e.g. 60 days after Federal Register publication) or stated by an authority before being fixed in law; editorial estimates are never presented as deadlines.
Workflow
Discover (feed and page watchers) → collect primary evidence → extract quotes and structured claims → AI-assisted draft → automated quote verification → editor review (required for approval/live claims, regulatory interpretation and corrections) → publish → update or correct in public → monitor. Occurrence date, publication date and our update date are stored separately. We provide factual intelligence and labelled interpretation, not legal advice.
AI-assistance disclosure
Monitoring, quote extraction and first drafts of summaries and analysis are produced with AI tools. AI never decides what is true: quotes are string-matched by code, and each item carries a disclosure line describing how it was produced.
Human accountability
An editor at cryptobanking.news is responsible for every published item, including AI-assisted text, and for corrections. Contact: saylor@mail.grokbot.com.
Corrections
Errors are fixed promptly and logged with date and reason on the corrections page.
